RAND Europe’s new report for the European Commission (EC), Europe’s policy options for a dynamic and trustworthy development of the Internet of Things, aims to inform a consistent European policy stance capable of fostering an IoT that helps meet key European challenges.

The report:

  • provides a working definition of the IoT;
  • defines the status quo and introduces the important issues for policy makers, including competitiveness, accountability, ethics and data protection;
  • presents a gap analysis of the current EC legal frameworks in these areas; and
  • makes policy recommendations including a ‘soft law’ approach, whereby the EC uses monitoring, innovation policy and industrial policy to foster future development of the IoT.
