This workshop is organised from the leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies (LEIT) part of Horizon 2020, namely the ICT area and is in line with Photonics 21 and EPoSS strategic research agendas and micro & nano electronics implementation strategy. It is designed as a bridge between the technology development in ICT and healthcare in the Societal Challenges and it complements initiatives taken at the societal challenges "health" level e.g. to eHealth and active & healthy ageing European partnership initiatives. The Workshop will take place in Brussels on 20 November 2013.

The workshop aims at accelerating the innovation and use of advanced key enabling technologies such as micro-nanoelectronics and photonics in order to address challenges in healthcare applications.
The workshop has the following targets:
- Enable technology research and innovation to be oriented towards unmet medical needs, a prerequisite for a fast translation of ideas and technologies to solutions; health practitioners, authorities, industry and market players will detail these needs in the “unmet user needs” session.
- Introduce emerging technology and systems which are on the verge to solutions/products or gained product status very recently. These success stories from all over Europe will be presented to stimulate the discussion of key elements and exchange best practice in research and innovation (Advanced technology prototypes & solutions session).
- The highly-regulated environment and the conservative approach to innovations are specific and necessary in fields that require to deal responsible with the highest good of the citizens. Resulting barriers and obstacles for a fast deployment of solutions and how to remove them are the topic of the final session. It will also introduce the instrument “pilot action”, pre-commercial public procurement and public procurement of innovation, SME support and other collaboration opportunities for innovation among users, industry, technology providers and public authorities as potential remedies to remove some of the barriers (Innovation Challenges & Solutions session).
