ICT Components and Systems Made in Europe?

Without any doubt information and communication technologies (ICT) are a key element of Europe's economic performance and essential to economic growth. To strengthen the competitiveness of industry, successive R&D Framework Programmes have been set up in Europe since 1980. What seems crucial for Europe's growth and jobs in the future is that its manufacturing industry remains competitive vis-à-vis the challenges of globalisation.

To investigate those challenges, the Commission has launched a study entitled "Exploring the potential of ICT Components and Systems Manufacturing in Europe" with the aim to contribute to a thorough analysis of the current ICT manufacturing landscape in Europe and to formulate recommendations for decision makers regarding the future orientation and structure of R&D in ICT components and systems.

As well as assessing aspects such as:

  • Today's European electronics manufacturing landscape,
  • The impact of the Semiconductor Equipment Assessment Initiative,
  • The deployment potential and feasibility of Organic and Large-area Electronics (OLAE),
  • Potential environmental and health impacts of large-scale OLAE manufacturing and use in Europe,
  • Current R&D investment trends,
the study was also meant to provide recommendations for research and policy actions.

VDI/VDE-IT and CEA Leti, the organisations responsible for conducting this research, presented their findings to representatives of the European institutions and industry on the "ICT Components and Systems Made in Europe?" event, which took place in Brussels on 13 April, 2011.

The Final Report will be made available soon at the CORDIS Website: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/micro-nanosystems/ictman_en.html
