IRISS is a Coordination and Support Action that receives funding from the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under Grant Agreement No. 287842. It involves 16 contractual partners - all of which EPoSS members - from 7 countries and a number of Associated Partners. The start date is 1 October 2011; the project duration is 24 months. The work in IRISS is organized in 7 thematic Work Packages.
IRISS structure and work packages
Work package 2 targets coordination and interaction of national and EU R&D programmes in the area of Smart Systems Integration (SSI). It is led by IKERLAN.
Work package 3 on cooperation between the actors along the value chain of Smart Systems Integration with a focus on SMEs and including a study on value creation of Smart Systems in Europe is led by Starlab (WP3).
Work Packages 4 and 5 aim at take-up of Smart Systems by relevant industrial sectors. WP4 focuses on manufacturing - both manufacturing of Smart Systems and the use of Smart Systems for manufacturing and is led by STM. WP5 is on Smart Systems in health and beyond with a special focus on Micro-Nano-Bio Systems. WP leader is Sorin.
Work package 6 under the leadership of Siemens covers roadmapping exercises linking application requirements with SSI needs and the identification of new research needs.
Work package 7 concentrates on stimulation of international cooperation and is led by Hitachi.
The above work packages are further supported by a work package in infrastructure, engagement and dissemination (WP8). This work package, which is led by coordinator VDI/VDE-IT, has a strong focus on activities that target until now SSI unaware stakeholders and user communities.
Project Abstract
Europe benefits from leadership across a breadth of industries including automotive, avionics, information and communication technologies, medical equipment and industrial automation. Incorporated smart systems, including smart components (and in the future micro-nano-bio-systems) often provide the key technical features for the competitiveness of products in these sectors.
The objectives of IRISS are to hedge and extend competitive advantages of European industry in order to make Europe number one in the world in Smart Systems research and production. Therefore this coordination and support action focuses on improvements of the European innovation system in the smart systems sector, which comprises
- the formulation of a coherent strategy involving all major stakeholders
- the opening of new application fields and markets
- the intensification of cooperation in the smart systems value chain, paying particular attention to the inclusion of SMEs
- the overcoming of fragmentation in the political landscape.
- to establish applications-pull in a supply chain by engaging with user communities in fast-developing sectors, alerting them to the capabilities of smart systems and extracting their needs and ideas for introduction
- to examine and put forward cases for focused effort in the manufacturing sector and health sector, which both promise to provide hubs for coordinated activity, combined with world benchmarking and a survey of the longer-term technology landscape
- to draw together a network to support the implementation of its recommendations.
IRISS includes 16 contractual partners (from 7 EU countries) and a number of associated partners. It covers the whole value chain from researchers to end-users.
In order to reach its objectives IRISS makes use of the EPoSS structures and builds upon the results of the coordination action CEPoSS.
