Call for Participation: IPC Standards Working Group - Printed Electronics

IPC Kick-off Printed Electronics Standards Working Group Meeting at the APEX/IPC in Las Vegas on 13 April 2011

Printed electronics is an emerging field that continues to receive great attention due to the industry analysts that project a $60B market by 2020. These projections are supported by the compelling product demonstrations resulting from significant investments in the development of materials, processes, and products. An increasing number of companies have committed to participate in this space, while many others have been conducting in-depth studies to determine the size of the opportunity for a variety of applications, e.g., displays, lighting, solar, sensors, etc. One potential impediment to the introduction of these printed electronics based products in the marketplace is the lack of consensus based standards adopted by members of the printed electronic supply and value chains.

The IPC is interested in establishing a new Working Group (WG) to identify areas for standards development. As an example, individuals within the industry have requested the development of standard methods for reporting on testing and intrinsic properties associated with substrates. This request was made because it appears that each company has independently developed measurement and reporting procedures that may or may not be transferable to suppliers. Some have suggested that without openly defined standards, the acceptance and diffusion of printed electronics based products will be severely impeded.

IPC is seeking volunteers with expertise in printed electronics to join the WG to help identify and prioritize the topics requiring standards. The information concerning the Kick-off Meeting is given below for those individuals interested in learning more about the effort.
