The University of Malta, as a partner of the Malta Semiconductors Competence Centre, invites to register for the online course „Design for Electromagnetic Compatibility“ offered by the University Semiconductors Competence Centre.
Dates: 14-17 September 2026
Time: 09:00-16:00 each day (CET)
Location: Online Sessions
This four-day online course is taught in English and available free of charge, but with limited slots. It introduces essential concepts of electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and electrostatic discharge (ESD) for microelectronics engineers. Each day features three hours of theoretical learning followed by three hours of practical sessions using the Sonnet electromagnetic simulator. Participants will explore EMI sources, coupling mechanisms, noise types, grounding, power distribution, filtering, and shielding techniques.
The course emphasises EMC design methodologies for integrated circuits and PCBs, including layout practices, decoupling, and power-supply noise reduction. Practical exercises will involve modelling interconnects and analysing S-parameters and current distributions. The course also covers relevant EMC legislation, including EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, and discusses ESD topics such as protection structures for various circuit types. It concludes with a design challenge requiring participants to improve a microelectronic layout.
