Dear EPoSS Newsletter Subscriber,

Before listing relevant news and events for the Smart Systems community we would like to thank all EPoSS members for their participation in the platform’s activities in the past year. We would like to express our gratefulness for your contributions to the EPoSS strategy processes as well as to policy documents and thematic papers. Thanks to this EPoSS is widely recognised within the community of Smart Systems stakeholders, at the level of European and national public authorities, and also increasingly in neighbouring thematic areas and countries outside of Europe, e.g. in the US, in Japan, China and Brazil.

In 2012 EPoSS was very active in terms of contribution to policy processes and publication of documents and white papers on numerous Smart Systems key topics which inter alia consisted of:

  • the intensive work on the new EPoSS Strategic Research Agenda (to be published in spring 2013) through a large-scale public survey, in-depth expert surveys and a series of expert workshops
  • the discussions about and the contributions to the setting up of a new Joint Technology Initiative of EPoSS, ENIAC and ARTEMIS
  • the preparation of the European Green Vehicles Initiative PPP
  • the Smart Systems innovation SWOT that was delivered to the Commission as input to the further development of Horizon 2020
  • the publication of a number of Smart Systems Show Cases
  • the setting up of an EPoSS Expert Working Group on Smart Systems for Manufacturing & Robotics, and the subsequent publication of a respective position paper
  • the large-scale survey on a common position on Smart Systems in health and MNBS
  • the EPoSS contribution to the European Commission's consultation on Micro-Nano-Bio Systems
  • the publication of the EPoSS White Paper "The case of MNBS in Europe - New Products, New Markets, EU's Industries in the Lead"
  • the joint publication of EPoSS, ERTRAC and SmartGrids of the 2nd edition of the European Roadmap "Electrification of Road Transport"
  • the joint publication of EPoSS, ARTEMIS and ENIAC of the High Level Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the ICT Components and Systems Industries
  • the joint position of the European Technology Platforms from the ICT sector (EPoSS, ISI, NESSI, Net!Works and Photonics21) on Horizon 2020
  • the interview action and specific SME survey on organisations' experience in the Smart Systems value chain and with working in Smart Systems
  • the initiation of a strategy, community building and priority setting process for the topic of Smart Systems and Energy

EPoSS organised or contributed to a number of Smart Systems events in the course of 2012, among others the SSI 2012 in Zurich, the MNBS 2012 in Athens, the AMAA 2012 in Berlin, and the EPoSS Annual Forum 2012 in Paris.

At the General Assembly 2012 the EPoSS members elected their new Board which is made up of the re-elected EPoSS Chairman Carmelo Papa of STMicroelectronics and five Vice-Chairmen. The Board Members will lead the platform for the next two years.

Regarding EPoSS success in past calls, in the MNBS objective of ICT Call 8, EPoSS members were again very successful, in that they are partners in 6 of the 8 funded projects, 3 of which are co-ordinated by EPoSS members. With respect to the last and largest round of FP7 Calls that was launched in July this year, EUR 390 million of the total of EUR 8.1 billion are available for topics relevant to the EPoSS community in ICT calls alone.

In the upcoming new Framework Programme there will be numerous funding opportunities for Smart Systems Integration, in particular in the "Competitive Industries", "Better Society" and "Excellent Science" pillars of Horizon 2020. This because Smart Systems Integration cuts across several of the Horizon 2020 challenges and the enabling and industrial technologies, and will also be supported through the Future and Emerging Technologies objective. Additionally, opportunities will be available in targeted support measures such as the European Green Vehicles Initiatives PPP, the Robotics PPP or the planned new JTI.

The year 2013 again will bring many exciting activities for EPoSS and the Smart Systems community: A decision will be taken early in the year regarding the implementation of the planned new joint JTI of EPoSS, ENIAC and ARTEMIS. On 13-14 March 2013 the SSI 2013 will take place in Amsterdam. EPoSS is organising two special sessions on the new SRA for Smart Systems Integration which will be published in spring. On 17-18 June the AMAA 2013 "Smart Systems for Safe and Green Vehicles" will take place in Berlin. Please also save already the date for the next EPoSS Annual Forum that will for the first time be a joint event with the annual MNBS consultation and concertation workshop. The Forum will take place in Cork, Ireland, 25-27 September 2013. We hope to meet many of you at those events.

We would like to thank you again for a successful 2012 and wish you and your family
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
