Dear EPoSS Newsletter Subscriber,

Before listing Selected News Items and Upcoming Events, we would like to provide you with a brief review of an exciting year, and thank you for your involvement and contributions. 2013 has been a very special and spectacular year for EPoSS in many respects:

  1. Throughout the year, the associations representing the major stakeholders in the fields of nanoelectronics (AENEAS), embedded systems (ARTEMIS-IA) and smart systems (EPoSS) have closely cooperated with the European Commission in setting-up, under the umbrella of Horizon 2020, a new Public Private Partnership, the Joint Technology Initiative on Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership (JTI ECSEL).
  2. In March, at the SSI 2013 conference in Amsterdam, EPoSS organised two special sessions dedicated to the new Strategic Research Agenda on Smart Systems Integration, the first session on its content, the second on its implementation.
  3. In May, following invitation by the European Commission, EPoSS provided feedback on the preliminary outline of Specific Challenge 1.2 "Smart Systems Integration" of the first Work Programme of Horizon 2020 for the years 2014 and 2015.
  4. In June, EPoSS has presented to its members the final draft of its new SRA. Following a last round of feedback, the new SRA was published in September. By now, some 300 electronic copies were distributed to interested stakeholders, and the SRA is the most downloaded file in the EPoSS website.
  5. In July, Robert Madelin, Director-General of DG CONNECT, informed EPoSS of the recognition of EPoSS as a European Technology Platform (ETP) in the context of the upcoming "Strategy for European Technology Platforms: ETP2020" and the revised criteria for recognition. EPoSS was evaluated based on the self-assessment form that it submitted in response to the 2013 round of ETP assessment and against the ETP2020 draft strategy.
  6. On 18th September, the new EPoSS Association, a non-profit association according to German law, was founded in Berlin. This step opened up new options for co-operations, given its capability to contract and to make formal agreements (cfr. the JTI ECSEL).
  7. One week later, the EPoSS General Assembly & Annual Forum 2013, which for the first time was a joint event with the Consultation and Concertation Workshop on MNBS, took place in Cork, Ireland. This event which was co-organised by Tyndall National Institute and the European Commission, attracted some 190 experts, representing more than 100 organisations from 17 countries. At the General Assembly, EPoSS members voted in favour of Turin as the venue of the EPoSS Annual Forum 2014.
  8. Equally in September, the Coordination Action IRISS ended. The project has supported the strategic activities of EPoSS since October 2011. It has brought Smart Systems research actors and industrial stakeholders much closer, delivering important documents on European position in Smart Systems and publishing the SRA, a base to significantly increase investments and visibility of the domain as a whole.
  9. In November, EPoSS has shown strong presence at the ICT Event in Vilnius, with a booth and two networking sessions, one of which was a joint session with the two other private partners of the JTI ECSEL, ARTEMIS-IA and AENEAS. The other was on the SSI Ecosystem in Europe and was organised by the partners of the new “EPoSS Coordination Action” EXPRESS, which will start in January 2014.
  10. And finally, on 10th December, i.e. one day before the first LEIT ICT Call opened, EPoSS organised the EPoSS Proposers’ Day 2013 with more than 100 participants, 40 project proposals and over 70 technology and partner offers and requests.

The success of EPoSS builds upon the engagement and contributions of its strong and energetic membership base. We would therefore like to thank all EPoSS members for their participation in the platform’s activities in 2013, and those that have already signed up for membership in the new EPoSS Association for making this endeavour a success. We would like to express our appreciation for your contributions to the new EPoSS SRA, as well as to the many other strategy and policy processes and documents. Thanks to your engagement EPoSS is acknowledged within and beyond the Smart Systems community in and outside of Europe.

We hope that by early 2014, all those that have been members of EPoSS, will have signed up for membership in the new EPoSS Association, so that they will be part of the many exciting activities to come. 2014 will see the start of the JTI ECSEL. It will also see the first round of EPoSS projects in Horizon 2020. In addition, it will bring many relevant events, such as the Brokerage Event of the private partners of ECSEL in Brussels on 3-6 February 2014, the SSI 2014 in Vienna on 26-27 March 2014 with two EPoSS Sessions (one on the SSI Ecosystem, the other on the JTI ECSEL & more), the AMAA 2014 "Smart Systems for Safe, Clean and Automated Vehicles" in Berlin on 23-24 June 2014, and the EPoSS Annual Forum 2014 in Turin.

We would like to thank you again for a successful 2013 and wish you and your family
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
