Report from the Smart Systems Integration Conference - SSI 2008
The SSI 2008, an event under the umbrella of EPoSS, was held on 9-10 April 2008 in Barcelona
Smart Systems Integration 2008 - The 2nd European Conference & Exhibition on Integration Issues of Miniaturized Systems – MEMS, MOEMS, ICs and Electronic Components was organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) together with EPoSS. The conference’s main topics were amongst others Advanced MEMS and MOEMS technologies, System integration and packaging, and Self–sufficient sensor networks. A special session was dedicated to the activities of EPoSS. The ETP also had a booth at the exhibition.
Keynote speakers at the SSI 2008 were Dr. Augusto de Albuquerque (EU-Commission) and several industry representatives including EPoSS chairman Dr. Klaus Schymanietz (EADS) who pointed out the goals of the platform for 2008: to suggest options for public private partnership on different levels, and to support the platform’s members in setting up excellent project proposals targeted at the different calls in the frame work programme.
The EPoSS special session dealt with industrial R&D strategies for the domain of smart systems, where stakeholders pointed out that European companies have the chance to take the lead of a globalized market. The R&D needs, identified in the EPoSS Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), were delineated in the following subjects: Advanced functionalities, energy autonomous, networked operation, and integration and reliability matters. Chaired by Dr. GĂĽnter Lugert (Siemens), the session speakers gave an overview of the activities of the EPoSS Working Groups. The Automotive Working Group also held a meeting in connection with the SSI 2008.
