Two years for spreading Smart System knowledge across Europe: inSSIght

The European project inSSIght aims to increase use and awareness of smart systems.

In-depth support for innovation and exploitation in Smart Systems Integration: this is the meaning of inSSIght, the new European Coordination and Support Action, which started at the beginning of 2017 with the goal of fostering successful integration of smart systems in a broader spectrum of products and applications.

A Smart System is an integrated system with cognitive features, which can better and more smartly respond to the needs of the users while reducing costs in its development, industrialisation and use.

Complementary to other Key Enabling Technologies such as nanotechnology, photonics, biotech or chemistery, smart systems are increasing their role as building blocks in sectors with high potential for growth and high return on investment, such as IoT, Industry 4.0, electric mobility, automated driving, smart medical devices etc.

With a budget of 1.5 Million Euro and a duration of two years, the major objectives of the inSSIght project are to:

  • secure the position in European policies of SSI as a key enabler for innovation,
  • support the Smart Systems industry and community in Europe, as represented by EPoSS,
  • open new market opportunities for SSI by responding to the needs of the demand side.

Furthermore the project will unveil and promote new functions and advantages enabled by the integration of smart systems in existing products and processes.

The 18 partners from SSI-related clusters, research institutes but also from large industries commited to smart ystems, including Siemens, Bosch, Infineon, Roche Diagnostics, AVL List and Festo, took up the challenge of spreading the adoption of Smart System across the EU.

Mrs. Petra Weiler, Coordinator of inSSIght stated: “Digitising and smartening traditional sectors of industry and services is not trivial and requires collaborations to adapt smart solutions to the particular applications and maximise benefits to (end-)users and customers. Industries from different sectors found in inSSIght the favourable platform to collaborate on innovative solutions to develop these new smart & safe solutions.”

First community meeting will take place in the framework of the SSI 2017 on 7th, 8th and 9th March 2017 in Cork, Ireland.
